Motorola is releasing the new moto G POWER on a slightly accelerated timeframe by launching the 2022 edition of one of the most known handsets in the “moto G” family.
The overall goals remain similar to before: a long-battery, large screen smartphone with good camera performance and features (for the price). All that comes at an affordable price of $199 or $249, depending on the RAM and storage configuration.
The 6.5-inch IPS LCD display gets a refresh speed of 90Hz (previously 60Hz) to make scrolling and other user interaction noticeably smoother. It’s unclear if the refresh has a variable rate, and perhaps Motorola can shed some light on that later.
The phone is technically a bit smaller than last year, but it’s a hefty 203g phone. Other phones are heavier, so it’s not a problem since we get a 5000 mAh battery capacity. Motorola claims a battery life of “3 days”, which is a best-case scenario.
However, looking at the battery specifications and the overall total system power, we’re inclined to think that it will indeed deserve its “G Power” product name by having a long battery life.
The included 10W charger can charge the phone at a reasonable speed, and these days, we should be grateful to have a charger in the box at all. Ironically, more expensive phones are cutting corners on providing high-speed chargers.
The “Dark Grove” back cover design is original and interacts nicely with the ambient light. its surface texture also makes the phone somewhat less slippery.
Hold it tight because the phone is not waterproof, but an IP52 IP Rating certifies that it can withstand dust and water spraying. Just don’t immerse it.
The rear camera gets an upgrade in the form of a 50MP primary sensor, with relatively large 1.3-micron pixels, paired with an f/1.8 lens. Motorola has also included a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP Bokeh sensor to increase background blur accuracy in portrait photography. There’s no noticeable update on the selfie camera.
Inside the phone, an 8-core MediaTek Helio G37 platform with 4GB of RAM is responsible for the computing power. We’ll run some benchmarks in the full review to see exactly how the Helio G37 is positioned in a very competitive market.
As of late, MediaTek has gained a lot of traction, and the company’s CEO Rick Tsai mentioned that his company is now “the largest smartphone SoC maker globally.” That’s quite an achievement.
The new moto G Power exists with 64GB or 128GB of storage, and if that’s not enough, you can add 512GB of microSD storage.
